The party season is fast approaching and there's no better time than now to glam up in sequins and bling. But what's hot when it comes to styling hair? The key trend for this season is sophisticated yet understated, hair big on style investment - well maintained, lustrous and super shiny. It's ultra-styled but looks organic and naturally glamorous, not severe or contrived.

So if you are stuck for something for your hair to wear, here are some ideas for that extra wow factor.

Long Hair

cheryl-cole-long-hair.jpgThe trend:
Chic and well groomed, with movement through the mid lengths and ends.

Our Advice: "Opt for conical layers rather than square cut layers which have been popular for the last decade," advises Richard Ward. "Heavily graduated and retro inspired, they're cut quite short and choppy at the crown and angled long to marry to the baseline to create a crescendo and cascade of volume and movement."

How to get the look: Good volumising products at the root, heated rollers and a good light hold hairspray are the essential looks for creating this look. Alternatively, opt for extensions for pure sexiness and playfulness.

Who wears it best: Cheryl Cole, Giselle Bundchen

Curls

The trend:
soft, loose dishevelled waves

Our Advice: If curls aren't your thing then it's about texture - no more structure, just a soft scrunch-and-run look, it's relaxed glamour that takes effort but doesn't try too hard.

How to get the look: Curl sprays, diffusers and shine spray are essential kit bag items for creating soft, sexy waves.

Who wears it best: Jennifer Aniston, Kate Hudson

Hair up

The trend:
Classic, vintage styling

Our Advice: The disconnected chignon is worn classily and sleek at the nape, with the front worn loose and flowing to make hair look less severe, the result is a soft, effortlessly groomed look which work perfectly for any age.

How to get the look: This style works best on hair that isn't freshly washed. Leave the front loose and free and twist the back into a low slung chignon - plenty of hairspray, grips and beautiful decorations are must-haves for this style.

Who wears it best: Miley Cyrus, Sienna Miller

Hair Accessories

The trend:
Anything goes, as long as it's eye-catching and makes a statement.

Our Advice: The 80s are still playing a big role in hair and when it comes to accessories, bright, vibrant hair bands are great for a younger, cooler look.

How to get the look: Whether it's a matte or shiny finish, brighten up the style with vintage brooches, or feathered Alice bands.

Who wears it best: Pixie Lott, Lily Allen
